Brooklyn

The Story of the Brooklyn

Named after the New York borough, the Brooklyn cocktail was inspired by the already established and popular Manhattan and Bronx cocktails of its neighbouring boroughs.

Jacob ‘Jack’ Grohusko, also known as the "Jack the Whiskey King," was a seasoned mixologist with a penchant for crafting innovative and sophisticated drinks. His creative genius shone bright at Baracca’s Restaurant in Wall Street, lower Manhattan, where he served as the head bartender. Despite being rooted in Manhattan, Grohusko's inventive spirit knew no bounds, leading him to create the iconic Brooklyn cocktail.

The cocktail's inception was serendipitous, with Grohusko drawing inspiration from the vibrant and diverse cocktail culture of New York City. As he experimented with different ingredients and flavor profiles, he sought to pay homage to the unique character of Brooklyn, a borough known for its eclectic mix of cultures and influences.

While Grohusko's connection to Brooklyn may have been tenuous, his passion for mixology and dedication to his craft were unwavering. The Brooklyn cocktail soon became a beloved classic, cherished for its harmonious blend of rye whiskey, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and Amer Picon, reflecting the spirit of innovation and creativity that defined the cocktail scene of the era.

Recipe

30 ML Rye whiskey

30 ML Rosso vermouth

05 ML Picon amer

05 ML Maraschino liqueur

In a mixing glass, combine 30 ML of flavorful Rye whiskey known for its spicy and robust notes. Add 30 ML of Rosso vermouth, a sweet and herbal fortified wine that complements the whiskey perfectly. Incorporate 5 ML of Picon amer to introduce a subtle bitterness and complexity to the mix, balancing out the sweetness of the vermouth. Finally, include 5 ML of Maraschino liqueur, adding a hint of cherry flavor and a touch of sweetness.

These carefully measured ingredients come together to create a harmonious cocktail with layers of flavor. Stir the mixture well with ice to chill and dilute slightly, then strain it into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon or a cherry to enhance the presentation and add a citrusy aroma to the drink.
